Background of the Study

Socioeconomic status (SES) is a critical determinant of health outcomes, with lower SES often associated with a higher prevalence of mental health disorders. In Zamfara State, a region marked by economic challenges, cultural traditions, and limited access to healthcare, women are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues exacerbated by poverty, unemployment, and limited educational opportunities (Aliyu et al., 2024).

Women in Zamfara face unique challenges that include household responsibilities, limited access to healthcare, and exposure to violence, all of which contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression. Moreover, the interplay of socioeconomic factors such as income inequality, education level, and employment status significantly influences mental health outcomes (Aminu & Sule, 2023). This study seeks to explore the relationship between socioeconomic status and mental health among women in Zamfara State, assessing how economic hardship and social factors contribute to the mental well-being of women in the region.

Statement of the Problem

In Zamfara State, women face significant challenges related to their socioeconomic status, including poverty, limited access to education, and a lack of economic opportunities. These challenges contribute to mental health struggles such as depression and anxiety, yet the relationship between socioeconomic status and mental health among women in the state has not been thoroughly examined. This study aims to assess how socioeconomic factors influence mental health outcomes among women in Zamfara State and provide recommendations for improving mental health support.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of socioeconomic status on the mental health of women in Zamfara State.
  2. To examine the relationship between income, education, and employment status and mental health among women.
  3. To identify strategies for improving mental health among women by addressing socioeconomic disparities.

Research Questions

  1. How does socioeconomic status influence the mental health of women in Zamfara State?
  2. What is the relationship between income, education, and employment status and mental health among women in Zamfara State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the negative impact of low socioeconomic status on women’s mental health?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Lower socioeconomic status is associated with poorer mental health outcomes among women in Zamfara State.
  2. Income, education, and employment status significantly influence the mental health of women in Zamfara State.
  3. Implementing socioeconomic support programs will improve the mental health of women in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on women in Zamfara State, assessing how various socioeconomic factors such as income, education, and employment affect their mental health. Limitations include the difficulty of measuring mental health outcomes without professional diagnosis and potential biases in self-reported socioeconomic status.
